“Think of yourself my child and remember from whence you come”. This warning from my mother has cost me the joy of campus life.
I love writing and really loved participating in contest of writing where children of ‘the high and mighty’ rock. So instead of showing up my face for fame, hiding in the shadows of friends who could rub shoulders up with such children was my only hope.. Simply because I wanted to stay out of trouble with the financially endowed children, as a child from an average home.
I was the faceless backbone of about three champions of the writing contest in my school during my final three years of my undergraduate degree.
Just now at the site of this writing challenge topic, I reasoned to myself, “Should I have made the bold step to show up my face and take bold risks, instead of staying in the shadows with the aim of staying out of trouble, who know the great credit I would have buttressing my name…”
Yeah, yeah!!! To our mothers especially, allow the children more rooms to explore, please.. Some warnings are simply unnecessary.
